What is in a thermal interface material or electrically conductive adhesive?
Separate heat transfer from electrical conduction
A thermal interface material fills the contact between surfaces to support heat transfer, while an electrically conductive adhesive provides a bonding material with an electrical path. We begin with the matrix and filler questions because the same assembly can contain both kinds of material in different locations. Solder metal and flux chemistry are covered in our solder-paste guide; this page concerns thermal and adhesive interface materials.
Read the thermal matrix and filler separately
Thermal greases commonly combine silicone oil or another carrier with thermally conductive fillers, whereas thermal pads can use a silicone-rubber matrix. Alumina, boron nitride and zinc oxide are common thermal-filler families, and blends can use more than one filler to build the inorganic fraction. Phase-change interface materials soften or change phase over an intended temperature range and can combine an organic phase with thermal fillers.
A component study can support the matrix-polymer family, filler identities and approximate proportions where the evidence permits those distinctions. Similar filler names do not establish similar thermal conductivity because particle distribution, contact between particles and the installed interface also matter. For example, a manufacturer who wants to compare two pads can ask whether their matrix and inorganic balance differ before evaluating them under the same compression conditions.
Conductive adhesive and silver-paste questions
Electrically conductive adhesives can use epoxy or silicone matrices filled with silver, nickel or carbon materials to form conductive connections. A conductive silver paste can contain silver particles, an organic binder or vehicle and smaller ingredients controlling dispersion and application. ICP-MS can contribute metal-element composition information within a formulation study, with the method selected for the particular specimen.
An elemental result alone does not distinguish a metal filler from every possible metal-containing compound, so filler interpretation needs the wider evidence. A composition study does not establish particle-size distribution, thermal conductivity or electrical resistance; those require separate measurements under defined conditions. In a filled adhesive, curing, filler contact and bond-line geometry can change electrical behavior without changing the broad ingredient names.
Declare pads, pastes and attached components accurately
We can review cured conductive adhesive, solid thermal pads and new battery-free components carrying these materials after declaration, SDS and component review. Thermal grease and uncured conductive adhesive in semi-solid form are reviewed case by case after declaration; paste consistency does not settle ingredient eligibility. Declare a silver paste and its solvent ingredients first; a paste containing prohibited hazardous-list solvents is not received as supplied, and a newly dried or cured deposit can be proposed for review instead. Other unclear matrix, carrier or component combinations are reviewed case by case after declaration, with the actual liquid or semi-solid state disclosed.
How to start
We review overseas industrial samples before acceptance. Use our industrial analysis page and sample-shipping guide to prepare your declaration. Our reports are research-grade analytical reports from a laboratory that is not accredited. They cannot be used for product registration or legal proceedings.
FAQ
Does a thermal filler also make a pad electrically conductive?
Thermal conduction and electrical conduction are different properties; fillers such as alumina or boron nitride can support heat transfer without serving as metallic electrical pathways.
Can metal content alone identify silver-paste performance?
Silver content is a compositional observation, while electrical behavior also depends on particle contact, binder, processing and the geometry of the deposited material.
Is uncured conductive adhesive accepted because it is a paste?
Semi-solid conductive adhesive is reviewed case by case after declaration and SDS review; ingredients containing prohibited hazardous-list substances remain outside overseas receipt.
What should be specified for a coated electronic component?
Name the thermal or conductive material, mark its location and identify the substrate and any other attached layers so the target deposit is not confused with the whole component.
