PFAS deformulation: can a lab identify fluorinated additives or fluorosurfactants in a coating, ink or plastic compound?

Short answer

We can investigate supported identities and semi-quantitative estimates for suitable extractable fluorinated additives, while polymer-bound material may remain at family level. Fluorinated coatings, printed inks, plastic specimens and water-based concentrates are reviewed case by case after declaration. The English report would distinguish supported ingredients, approximate contributions and unresolved fluorinated material rather than supply the complete original recipe.

Am I looking for a fluorosurfactant, a surface additive or a fluoropolymer?

Which fluorinated ingredients can serve different jobs in the same product?

Fluorosurfactants used for coating and ink wetting or leveling can include perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, sulfonic acids and their salts, fluorotelomer surfactants and betaines, or fluorinated ether surfactants containing polyoxyethylene groups. Fluorinated acrylate copolymers can serve as leveling or easy-clean additives, whereas fluorinated silanes can contribute a surface treatment whose reacted form differs from the supplied molecule. PTFE, PVDF and FEP can be coating resins or fillers, while PVDF and fluoroelastomer families can also occur as processing aids in polyolefin extrusion.

Can a small additive be distinguished from fluoropolymer material?

An extractable ionic or ionizable surfactant presents a different analytical question from an insoluble fluoropolymer, so identify whether you are investigating wetting chemistry, extrusion assistance or the coating body. These molecular routes do not directly name every fluoropolymer; backbone evidence may remain a family clue, and a missing extractable signal does not establish absence of fluorinated material.

Where do the broader coating, film and finishing questions belong?

Use our coating guide for the whole binder and pigment system, and our packaging-film guide for the surrounding film additive package. Fluorinated water- and oil-repellent finishes on textiles or paper belong with our finishing-auxiliary guide, while the carrier and emulsifier balance belongs with our surfactant-blend guide.

How would we investigate the fluorinated contribution in the declared specimen?

1. We would record the accepted layer, polymer matrix and preparation history, then divide corresponding portions so a surface-treatment question stays distinct from a whole-part question.

2. We would prepare suitable extracts for accessible fluorinated ingredients, checking what remains insoluble and whether the substrate or binder obscures the small additive contribution.

3. We would investigate suitable ionic and ionizable fluorosurfactants mainly with LC-MS/MS, and some volatile fluorinated alcohols or neutral small molecules with GC-MS where preparation and reference evidence support identification.

4. We would estimate supported extractable ingredients semi-quantitatively on the stated specimen basis, keeping those estimates separate from any unresolved fluoropolymer contribution.

5. We would review alternative molecular assignments and compare corresponding unused materials where available, checking whether extraction or surface concentration explains a difference before attributing it to a changed formulation.

Why can molecular analysis find a surfactant without measuring all fluorinated material?

LC-MS/MS separates suitable dissolved molecules and examines selected ion-fragment relationships, so an accessible ionizable fluorosurfactant can produce evidence for an ingredient identity within a mixed coating or polymer extract. GC-MS contributes evidence for some smaller neutral molecules that can enter gas-phase separation, including suitable retained fluorinated alcohols, but it does not convert the whole fluoropolymer into an unchanged molecular ingredient list. Both techniques depend on what preparation makes accessible, and related molecules or poorly extracted fractions can remain unresolved even when some ingredients have supported identities. The extract therefore answers which suitable molecules were found in that specimen, rather than describing every fluorinated contribution in the original product.

What will the PFAS deformulation report say, and which results will it leave out?

The conclusion card, component table, estimated proportions and data appendix would separate supported molecular identities, broader family evidence and unresolved material, with the extracted fraction and specimen basis stated. We do not report total fluorine; fluorine is outside our ICP-MS working coverage. This composition study does not provide migration amounts, surface energy, contact angle or stain-resistance values.

Our reports are research-grade analytical reports from a laboratory that is not accredited. They cannot be used for product registration or legal proceedings.

Which fluorinated sample forms should I declare before shipping?

Cured films, printed inks, plastic pellets or articles containing fluorinated additives, and water-based fluorosurfactant concentrates, are reviewed case by case after declaration. Solvent-based fluorinated finishes and coatings are not received as supplied; declare the original and any proposed cured film or solids fraction together for review.

Use our industrial inquiry page and shipping guide; ship after agreement, payment and an acceptance number.

FAQ

Does an identified surfactant describe the complete fluorinated package?

An identified extractable fluorosurfactant describes supported molecular evidence in the submitted fraction; inaccessible fluoropolymers and other unresolved ingredients can still contribute to the product.

Can a fluoropolymer name be read directly from these molecular results?

A fluoropolymer backbone may remain at family level; these results do not directly distinguish every polymer identity or restore a full original additive recipe.

Will identification predict the easy-clean behavior of my coating?

Fluorinated ingredient identification is composition evidence; surface arrangement, substrate and processing can still change easy-clean behavior, and this report does not provide a contact-angle or stain-resistance result.
