What plasticizer and stabilizer system is in a flexible PVC compound?

Separate the PVC resin from the flexibility package

Flexible PVC compounds combine PVC resin with plasticizers and supporting ingredients, so identifying PVC alone leaves much of the useful formulation question unanswered. Hoses, films, artificial leather, flooring and gelled plastisol parts can all use flexible PVC, with different balances of resin, plasticizer, filler and surface additives. We focus here on the flexibility and stabilization package; the broader pellet and concentrate questions belong in our plastic and masterbatch guide.

Which plasticizer family is present?

Common plasticizer families include phthalates, terephthalates, adipates, trimellitates and citrates, while epoxidized soybean oil can contribute plasticization and stabilization in suitable PVC systems. A flexible PVC product may contain a blend rather than one plasticizer, and several members of a family can contribute overlapping analytical features. GC-MS and LC-MS/MS can support organic-plasticizer identification where the compounds are accessible to the selected preparation and measurement, with specific names limited by reference evidence.

We distinguish a supported plasticizer-family finding from a semi-quantitative estimate of its contribution to the submitted PVC sample. For example, a manufacturer who wants to compare two hose compounds can ask whether the principal plasticizer families differ and whether their estimated contributions are comparable. A surface bloom can be enriched in mobile ingredients, so the deposit and the bulk PVC should not be treated as interchangeable composition samples.

Stabilizers, fillers and the limits of a component map

Flexible PVC formulations may use calcium-zinc, organotin or lead-salt heat-stabilizer systems, together with lubricants, mineral fillers and colorants. ICP-MS can provide metal-element evidence relevant to the stabilizer or filler question, but calcium, zinc, tin or lead alone does not establish the complete stabilizer chemistry. Calcium carbonate is a common PVC filler, and a calcium finding may therefore reflect filler as well as stabilization ingredients. We interpret the organic and inorganic findings together rather than assign every metal to one intended ingredient function.

A composition study can address whether a plasticizer family is supported, but it does not establish a processing temperature, mixing sequence or plastisol gelation schedule. A plasticizer identity or proportion estimate in this study is not a regulatory-compliance determination.

Declare pellets, articles or a gelled plastisol specimen

We review PVC pellets, new flexible articles and gelled plastisol sheets as solid samples after declaration, SDS and component review. Declare neat liquid plasticizers and ungelled plastisol paste first; they are not received from overseas as supplied, so propose a gelled sheet or finished PVC article for review instead. A formulation containing a substance outside the existing chemical inventory is reviewed case by case after declaration, even when proposed as a solid article.

How to start

We review overseas industrial samples before acceptance. Use our industrial analysis page and sample-shipping guide to prepare your declaration. Our reports are research-grade analytical reports from a laboratory that is not accredited. They cannot be used for product registration or legal proceedings.

FAQ

Can we distinguish phthalates from other PVC plasticizers?

A flexible PVC analysis can distinguish supported plasticizer families, while naming an individual compound depends on sufficiently specific reference spectra or standards.

Does tin prove one particular organotin stabilizer?

Tin is an elemental clue in a PVC stabilizer study, not a unique identity for one organotin molecule or commercial stabilization package.

Can a gelled plastisol reveal the original paste recipe?

A gelled plastisol can reveal retained PVC ingredients, but heating and ingredient loss can prevent reconstruction of the original paste balance or gelation procedure.

Can we send a liquid plasticizer bottle?

Declare the plasticizer bottle first; non-water-based liquid plasticizers are not received as supplied, and a solid PVC specimen containing the additive can be proposed for review.
